Milking the Cow

New Zealand soldiers milking a cow near the Somme during World War I. This wonderful photograph captures an unexpectedly domestic moment amid the devastation of the Western Front. With one soldier crouched at the udder and others gathered around, it's a reminder that the Kiwi resourcefulness and connection to the land didn't stop at the farm gate -- even in the fields of France.
