Trench Mortar Officers
New Zealand trench mortar officers on the Somme, surrounded by the tools of their grim trade. This powerful photograph from the Alexander Turnbull Library shows the reality of trench warfare -- soldiers crouched among equipment and debris, far from the recruitment posters that brought them there. A reminder of the resourcefulness and courage required to survive on the Western Front.
